When I first started making pottery I experimented widely with different Clay bodies and finishes and one technique in particular, hand coiling. I make all my own coils rather than using a pugmill so I can determine the size myself. I really enjoy the meditative quality of this technique and the time and patience it takes to create anything just enhances the process. Below is a small selection of some of the results. I have selected pieces that I hope show the breadth of my exploration, they are all coil pots and my themes and inspirations are directly from the natural world which I find endlessly beautiful and fascinating.

Hand coiled bottle finished with grey slip, scraffito decoration, low firing.

Two hand coiled pots in red earthenware fired to stoneware temperature

Large flower form, hand built using coiling technique, displayed in hand made steel stand. flower hand painted and lacquered.

Organic garlic vessel hand built using coils finished in semi matt white stoneware glaze.

Red earthenware bottle hand coiled, finished in black slip with scraffito decoration burnished and wax polished.

Balancing hats vessel, hand coiled construction in crank clay, fired to stoneware temperature.

Hand coiled vase decorated with red and blue slip with some scraffito decoration. Design inspired by tribal decoration.

Hand coiled pot in red earthenware biscuit fired in an electric kiln then smoke fired in sawdust. I love the totally naturalistic finish of smoke firing I burnished this one before it was biscuited and waxed and buffed it after smoking.

Pair of coiled pots to be displayed together, they look like they're sharing a good joke.White stoneware clay, black slip, scraffito design.

Fish tail bottle and tall gourd.Hand coiled from buff stoneware clay, painted with black slip and fired to stoneware temperature.

Hand coiled in red earthenware, burnished then biscuit fired then smoke fired in a sawdust kiln. Finished by waxing and buffing to a beautiful woody sheen.

Throughout making this range of black and white vessels, I seemed to be drawn to making them in pairs, I was really trying to improve my skill in hand coiling and I think each pair shows variations on a theme.

Trying to get away from the basic bottle shape here, still hand coiled but in an eliptical form then cut to the final shape when leatherhard. I call it Tatooed bird, the designs are different front and back.

Red earthenware bottle hand coiled, finished in blue slip with scraffito decoration. Trying out different colored slip here, really like the blue on red eartheware, low fired with a very dry looking finish.

This is a personal favourite of mine, and perfect for hand coiling, although it was quite difficult to do , I really feel that the end result is a very pleasing sensual piece. Finished with black slip, fired high then wax polished.

Small burnished and smoke fired bowl, pinched from one piece of clay with wire and weaving detail. This is a very simple piece but I think all the more satisfying  for that  reason.

This was a particularly difficult piece to create but all the more satisfying on completion.I used the coiling technique and branched off into two to create the swans necks. It also reminds me of Flemenco dancers. Finished in black slip with scraffito designs. Fired to Stoneware and wax polished.

Hand coiled pot made as a wedding present hence the tiered effect and the lacy finish. White slip over crank clay with scraffito spiral decoration.
